Beyond

"Beyond"
4X6, Oil on Aluminum Panel

My first outing painting on aluminum!  The photo reference for this was provided by a fellow artist from Finland.  This specific stretch of road, which looks to have been very treacherous on this foggy day is a bit north of Helsinki.

Gone Before the Dawn

Gone Before the Dawn
6X8, Oil on Panel
Available

My friend from Finland sent me some glorious sunrise pictures from the countryside north of Helsinki a month or so ago.  Her description of the experience of the moment was inspiring and I had to do a painting of it.

Further Still

Further Still
6X8, Oil on Panel
Available

An artist I know from Finland kindly provided me with this view of the area around her family's home taken a couple of weeks ago.  In turn, I provided her with a contemporary photo of a small lake near the Arkansas River (having much less snow and more leaves on trees!) for her to paint from.

This might be the only snow I get to paint this year given the crazy warm temperatures we keep having!

Befrosted Paths

Befrosted Paths
8X10, Oil on Panel
SOLD

We don't get a lot of snow in Arkansas that lasts long enough for a guy with a full time job outside of art to get out and paint it often.  So I jump at the chances when it does happen, even if it's just standing on my back patio and riffing greatly upon the view behind the house.

And obviously, this painting's been done for quite a while because even though it feels pretty chilly out there this week, summer is already trying to take hold here.

20 Favorite Paintings #6, Snow Laden by Walter Launt Palmer

Snow Laden
Walter Launt Palmer

I had never heard of this painter or seen any of his work until a Facebook friend posted this and some others from him a few months ago.  As I looked at more of his work, I marveled that he was so relatively unknown.

About this painting in particular, I love the rather subtle nature of the purples here.  I think purple can be an abused color because it so bold and attracts so much attention.  Once an artist starts using it, it can be addictive and become far too overpowering or even a crutch in work.  But here, the purple is kept in check well I think.  There is a nice stillness to this design as well while retaining a dynamic due to the placement of the foreground tree.  I also really like how the sky scintillating qualities due to those flecks of higher value streaming down.  Very nice edges on the barely detectable background hill too, all made possible by hitting the value so very near to the sky at the horizon.

Snowy Pinnacle, Pulaski County

Snowy Pinnacle
8X10, Oil on Panel
SOLD

This is a plein air I did a couple of months ago about a mile from my house.  It is rare that we get enough snow here in central Arkansas to last long enough for me to be able to get out and paint in it so I took advantage of this opportunity.  Pinnacle Mountain is a state park just outside of Little Rock.
