This was my first nocturne produced with Golden Opens.  Obviously, I was able to overcome the issue with making nice deep darks using Ultramarine blue and Dioxazine purple.  I did make some touch ups to this in the studio with oils but they were not major.

This is one of my paintings from the backpacking trip I took a few months ago.  It got a lot of rework in the studio with oils using the same palette as the Golden Open plein air painting did on location.  We camped alongside Gee Creek in a beautiful wooded flat beside the Ozark Highlands Trail.  It was my first true backpacking experience.  Carrying paints and plein air setup really limited the amount of supplies I could carry and that will need to be resolved for future trips longer than one night.

This is a little plein air I did a few months ago as the fall color started to come on.  This was on the Illinois Bayou in the Ozark National Forest north of Hector.

Apparently, there are at least two Saline Rivers in Arkansas.  The one most well known to Arkansans runs through, unsurprisingly, Saline County in central Arkansas.  This one is in western Arkansas.  I believe it eventually runs into the Cossattot River.  This one was done 100% en plein air.

Over a year ago I went over to the Ouachita National Forest to do some plein air painting and picture taking for Saline County.  The trip netted me this one of the North Fork of the Saline River as a studio piece from photo.  Earlier on in th day, I found a little stream on a road north of Lake Winona, parked and walked into the woods to see what I could find.  Lo and behold, there was this rock structure that is so indicitive of the Ouachitas that I had to set up and paint it.  I had just recently bought some tubes of gouache that I wanted to try en plein air so I broke those out first and had a disaster on my hands.  So I canned that and got out the oils and started in again.  I was really excited about the start of the start of the painting.  I opted for a more standard and quicker oil sketch with block in.  But at some point I got disenchanted with it.  The day was a touch overcast and cold and I was having a lot of trouble hitting the values right so I pulled up stakes and took off.  This thing sat under the table in the my studio for months and then I drug it out and fixed it up.

This little stream winding it's way through the Delta caught my eye and I had to pull over and get out for some picture taking.  Definitely a much thicker application of paint than is usual for me here, especially in the sky.
