Up Church Hill

Up Church Hill
9X12, Oil on Panel
Available

This one was completed quite some time ago but I never catalogued it except with some in-process photos on Facebook.  So I'm going to go ahead and count it on this year's tally of paintings.  From a criterium race several years ago in Little Rock.

Portals to Light

Portals to Light
6X8, Mixed Media on Panel
SOLD

This is a little plein air piece that has been sitting around for quite some time.  I was never terribly happy with the result in the field.  There were a lot of things I DID like about it but it was never really connecting with me.  I knew what it was too and had even written about it before here.  I started this with Golden Opens and it was one of my first attempts at using those.  I was a little bit frustrated that I was unable to make a nice deep dark with them at the time.  I later purchased some new colors so I could get deeper darks but then found myself unhappy with the consistency of the paint and not able to work it like I would have liked.

Regardless, I may still take the Golden Opens with me in a couple of weeks when I travel to Denmark!

Anyway, enjoy this one because I really like the result after the rework with oils in the studio.

Delta Autumn

Delta Autumn
8X10, Oil on Panel
Available

This past autumn continued a streak a less than optimal peak color in the state of Arkansas.  The weather was warmer than average and rains came too early.  This location is just east of Little Rock on an oxbow lake of the Arkansas River.  A local road bike runs past this so I knew from having sped by it in the past that is a nice peaceful and picturesque spot that might be worthy of painting.  I went by there one Saturday in November and snapped a photo for a photo exchange with a friend who also did a digital painting of this scene.

Befrosted Paths

Befrosted Paths
8X10, Oil on Panel
SOLD

We don't get a lot of snow in Arkansas that lasts long enough for a guy with a full time job outside of art to get out and paint it often.  So I jump at the chances when it does happen, even if it's just standing on my back patio and riffing greatly upon the view behind the house.

And obviously, this painting's been done for quite a while because even though it feels pretty chilly out there this week, summer is already trying to take hold here.

Snowy Pinnacle, Pulaski County

Snowy Pinnacle
8X10, Oil on Panel
SOLD

This is a plein air I did a couple of months ago about a mile from my house.  It is rare that we get enough snow here in central Arkansas to last long enough for me to be able to get out and paint in it so I took advantage of this opportunity.  Pinnacle Mountain is a state park just outside of Little Rock.

Quietude, Full Moon over White Oak Bayou

Quietude, Full Moon over White Oak Bayou
6X8, Oil on Panel
SOLD

This was a little plein air I did at Burns Park in North Little Rock a bit before Christmas.  I had the very interesting company of 4 skunks (1 of which was albino and a another was almost totally white) while I painted it.  They rooted around in the leaves nearby like I wasn't even there, wandering to and fro.  As they got a little too close for comfort and I began to think about leaving, I shined my light on them a spoke loudly but calmly to them, telling them to leave me alone and go away.  To my surprise, they complied and ran off nicely to the nearby woods.  The admonishment didn't last too long, though, as they came back a while later.  I kindly asked them to leave on several occasions, each time they would run away and come back, not unlike a group of young children.

This is an old painting whose foreground I had trouble reconciling.  I had tried both cooler and warmer colors but neither looked quite right.  After one last go at it, I finally was happy enough.

Burns Park Covered Bridge Nocturne, Pulaski County

Burns Park Covered Bridge Nocturne
6X8, Oil on Panel

I painted this one the same night as my Little Rock skyline painting.  It was more than a little creepy painting this one in a very dark part of the park where I think people go for all manner of things at night.  The moon was about 3/4 full and not providing nearly as much light as I expected.  I have painted the covered bridge from almost this exact same spot before.  My main goal here was to get the color and value to properly emulate the night and I think I did a pretty decent job.  I will need to go back when the moon, weather and temperatures fall into place and do a more interesting angle.

Little Rock Sparkle, Pulaski County

Little Rock Sparkle
6x8, Oil on Panel
SOLD

I painted this nocturne of the Little Rock skyline en plein air a few weeks ago.  This was done from Fort Roots which currently houses a VA location on top of a hill in North Little Rock.  It is a common place for cyclists to come and get some hill climbing in town and a large group ride passed by me the night I was out there.  I seem to be perpetually trying to catch up on photographing and posting work.

Big Dam Bridge in Purple, Pulaski County

Big Dam Bridge in Purple
6X8, Oil on Panel
SOLD

The Big Dam Bridge crosses the Arkansas River between Little Rock and North Little Rock just east of I-430.  It was said at the time it was constructed to be the longest pedestrian bridge in the world.  I believe it has been surpassed now by some bridge in China but it is still very impressive for a city the size of Little Rock.  It is the lynchpin of the Arkansas River Trail which is a multiuse paved trail system 14 miles long that is very popular with runners, walkers, and cyclists.

This was a plein air nocturne from a few weeks ago that needed just a few finishing touches in the studio.
